More work: medieval town stuff
December 23, 2009
I haven't commissioned any jobs lately, since I've been working on aspects of the game engine (adding decent audio capability, and modifying the game to use vertex buffer objects). That done, I'm looking for some new stuff.
First off, I've settled on the basic prices I'm offering. These prices are more or less fixed, although I'll adjust them if there's reason that a job would entail more or less work than typical.
Two things to keep in mind: 1. I am not looking for the level of quality that you see in Call of Duty or any other craptastic megahyped game. These models should be just detailed enough not to be mistaken for a cartoon. It is less work than a comparable project on a more graphically-intense game. 2. I am not very picky about most things, and if it is something am picky about (like a main character) I'll increase the bounty.
Here are the bounties:
- Exterior of a small building (house, pub): US$20
- Exterior of a medium building (bridge, strip mall): US$35
- Exterior of a large building (castle): US$50
- Interior of a room or hall, furnished but not decorated: US$50
- Rigged character: US$70
My main need now is for general medieval town stuff.
To apply, send me a link to your portfolio and what job you would like to do. Things that will improve your chances:
- if your portfolio is attractive and professional-looking (note: MySpace is usually neither)
- if you state specifically what you are interested in doing
- if you don't offer to do it for free
Newest jobs
July 26, 2009
Here are the small jobs I am commissioning this round.
-
Now is as good a time as any to get some music. For the most part, I am looking for low-key background mood music such as in Resident Evil, Jak and Daxter, or Psychonauts, rather than the orchestrated, melodic foreground music we have in Zelda or Final Fantasy. But it depends on the scene and what game is being parodied.
As with the visual artwork, I want to incorporate the game's anachronism into the music. I want the music to combine medieval sound with modern style for comedic effect. These should be loops of 1-2 minutes (what else?).
A relentlessly slow, bluegrassy song. It should be evocative of the mundanity and simplicity of farm life.
A shop song: the song that plays when you're in a shop. Should resemble the kind of music you hear when you're in a modern cheap discount store, i.e., Musak, elevator music, lift music.
A festive song. What the hell, let's have some disco music with medieval instruments. This song will be more in the foreground.
The King's song, which plays in the presence of the King of Bowtudgel. Note that the King in this game isn't all that kingly, at least not behind the scenes. In fact, he acts more like the evil vizier (although the King isn't evil, just kind of shady). So, the King's song should be both royal and shady. This can be a little bit more foreground.
General music for indoors area (such as someone's house). Don't really have anything in mind, except that it should be appropriate for indoors.
-
Now for some structures. These structures are for the sequence early in the game where the Hero, Kai, gets his commission to Rescue the Princess™.
A throne room interior. This is the King's public reception area; it's a large cathedral with a throne. I'll supply a model that shows what the throne room will basically look like; your job would be to add detail and make it look a tad more realistic.
A fairly large courtyard, the interior of the King's country castle, with various features on the inside (turrets, a large hall, some smaller buildings, some pools, etc). Overall it'll be pretty sparsely populated (kind of like it was built to accommodate a market, but no market is there).
A tiny royal palace, that can fit into a small city block. (I'll supply the actual puny dimensions.) This is the King's city residence, kind of like Buckingham Palace in England, except much, much smaller. This is a little harder than other jobs: I want this palace to have the style of large parlance even though it's tiny.
I have a few preexisting character models that need texture, including faces.
This game will use a lot (hundreds) of icons. I am looking for a set of about 50 random items, weapons, food, abstract stuff.
To apply, send me a link to your portfolio and what job you would like to do. Things that will improve your chances:
- if your portfolio is a professional-looking and attractive web page
- if you state specifically what job you are interested in
- if you don't offer to do it for free

This Month's Commission
May 23, 2009
This month I would like to commission three jobs:
A set of medieval peasant villagers. I need this bad because I find it hard to motivate myself to work on cut scenes using my own crappy monocolor characters. I want 4 or 5 characters for starters.
- Low poly, low detail. This game does not aim to be visually stunning, but it does aim to be just realistic-looking enough not to be mistaken for a cartoon. I just want a little tattering here, a little wrinkling there. Not intricate patterns and details.
- Texturing is required.
- Rigging would be nice, but not necessary. I suspect there might be some issues exporting rigging in a format I can import, so it might be moot.
- Animation and different levels of detail not required.
- I don't need a high level of detail in the face. Only larger features such as noses, ears, and cheeks should be modeled with polygons. Eyes and mouths should be textured.
- This game is a comedy, so it should be fairly upbeat as opposed to gloomy-looking.
Improve existing models. I need someone to jazz up the plain-looking scenery a bit, make it a little prettier, more realistic, and more detailed.
- As with the characters, scenery should be low poly, low detail (but not no detail), and fairly upbeat in mood.
I need texture applied to a few character models (including our hero, Kai).
Still working on it
May 9, 2009
Despite the long time between updates I am still working on the game; in fact I've updated the help wanted section and am about to commission some artwork. Game development had gone through a little lull due to the circumstances of my life (unemployment and relocation). However, I am now settled in Southern California with a day job, so game development continues.
